Thermal diffusivity, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity of Central Aare granite are reported in the temperature range from 25°C to 500°C. The chemical composition of these samples has been analysed using the x-ray fluorescence technique. Two types of porosity measurements were performed, mercury injection and water porosity on two samples sizes. To predict the thermal conductivity of granite rocks the existing mixing law and empirical models have been utilized. The electrical conductivity of cylindrical cores of Westerly granite, Indiana limestone and Nugget, St Peter and Kayenta sandstones was measured at about 25°C in vacuo, in air, and after saturation in distilled water, tap water, and 0.1 MNaCl solution. The three-electrode technique with a guard ring and the twoelectrode technique without a guard ring were used. Published 2 December 2004 • 2004 IOP Publishing Ltd Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Volume 37, Number 24 Natural stones with high energy density and excellent thermal conductivity are soapstone (by far the best) and marble. Significant irreversible changes in the properties due to thermal crack formation could be observed. Each rock sample underwent three consecutive heating and cooling cycles. The thermal conductivity experiments were performed at room temperature and normal pressure with air as the fluid in the pore spaces, using the Gustafsson's probe. Summary. The center column in the table above lists values for the thermal conductivity of the natural stone types. Manganese: 7.81: lowest thermal conductivity of any pure metal Marble: … Asghari Maqsood 1, Kashif Kamran 1 and Iftikhar Hussain Gul 1. Variations of porosity and thermal conductivity take place in regard to the alteration and fracturing of the granite. This granite is altered and composed of different weathered facies. Glass, for example, usually has a Thermal Conductivity Coefficient of about 1 W m -1 K -1 . Most natural stones have a Thermal Conductivity Coefficient of above 2, and often even 3 W m-1 K-1. Thermal conductivity of Granite: 25: 1.7 - 4.0: Graphite: Thermal conductivity of Graphite: 0: 151: Graphite: Thermal conductivity of Graphite: 25: 168: Some types of granite can be good heat conductors, but are not great at storing heat. Table of data giving the thermal conductivity of many common substances used in process industries. The k-value is a measurement of the rate of heat transfer through a solid material. K. Neglecting heat transfer by radiation, find the right wall surface temperature and the heat flux through the wall. Menu. To predict the thermal conductivity of granite samples the existing mixing law and empirical models have been used. Prediction of thermal conductivity of granite rocks from porosity and density data at normal temperature and pressure: in situ thermal conductivity measurements. The correlation coefficient R 2 was 0.745. These are perhaps the best stones for absorbing large amounts of heat quickly. Generic Limestone R is relatively pure polycrystaline calcite, solidity is the quotient of the solid grain volume divided by the bulk volume and K is thermal conductivity in W⋅m −1 ⋅K −1. The thermal conductivity and the thermal diffusivity of granites following the hot and cold cycles could be evaluated using empirical formulas. Due to the porosity dependence in all the existing models, ASTM standard methods have been utilized to measure the porosity including specific gravity and density.
