Following 2015’s universally lauded Feel the Misery album, vocalist Roughly 50% of the riffs on this record are of a high quality and leave a lasting impression, infused with the mournful beauty of an autumnal lament. Now I am slowly getting back into things. This album therefore does open a new chapter.

Since then, consistency has plagued several of the bands’ records (particularly evident on The Light at the End of the World, For Lies I Sire and The Ghost of Orion). Nevertheless, life prevailed. Since forming in Halifax in 1990, Now sailing out of these turbulent waters with their fourteenth full-length, For many, music is an outlet – a form of catharsis, taking the weft and weave of the personal and spinning it into healing art. Two? One decade? In a sort, this album can be seen as a direct aftermath to this very dark period, where he faced his own daughter's fight against cancer as well as the uttermost fear that no parent wish ever to face: losing a child. One wonders, without Stainthorpe and Craighan, whether Bride would be over.

In their place is Neil Blanchett on guitars and sometime Paradise Lost drummer Jeff Singer. If on the one hand the band faced the departure of some members, on the other the most serious issue happened in the personal life of vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe, who witnessed the struggle that his daughter had to endure against cancer.

Although the band has put out some largely excellent records over the last 20 years (namely The Dreadful Hours, A Line of Deathless Kings, and Feel the Misery), this record suffers from a distinct lack of consistency.

It’s been a long ride for My Dying Bride, and the journey hasn’t grown any easier for Halifax’s masters of misery.
